Program Description:
Washington Semester Program - Global Economics & Business
Program Advisor: Andrew Civettini

As globalization proceeds at breakneck speed and the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) remain on track to emerge as the largest economic and business power bloc of the 21st century, the impact of these developments is being felt by policy and business capitals across the world, but especially in Washington DC. Competitive forces of global capital and trade are increasingly shaping the policy environment for business – both domestic and international.

The Global Economics and Business Program at Washington Semester offers you a rare and exciting hands-on learning and work experience in the arena of trade, finance, and economic policy – all within the nation's capital. Washington DC offers an ideal learning environment to acquire unique leadership skills, to help you succeed in an increasingly competitive global market place: seventy-five percent of all multinational companies boast offices in D.C., and 200 foreign-owned companies are based in the greater Washington area, along with several Fortune 500 companies and hundreds of international organizations, trade and professional organizations, US Federal and State agencies, and foreign embassies. Students are hosted at both private and public institutions where they engage directly with prominent entrepreneurs, policy makers, and scholars at the various think tanks (Brookings, Cato, Heritage), multinational corporations and financial institutions (Caterpillar, Citibank, USB, Microsoft, BNP Paribus), US federal agencies (USTR, USITC, FED, White House Council of Economic Advisers), NGOs (Transparency International, Amnesty International), business lobbyists (US Chambers of Commerce) and labor unions (AFL_CIO, United Steelworkers), and multilateral institutions (World Bank, IMF, IADB, OAS).
